What’s Changed Over the Years

As a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Spider-Man has become an extremely popular and successful series that audiences love. Marvel capitalized on the growing popularity of superhero films by producing more and more movies based on their comics.

When Spider-Man first came out, it was loved by fans, and not only were more sequels released, but different franchise films featuring different stars as Spider-Man were released as well. As Andrew Garfield’s breakout film, although not necessarily for Toby McGuire or Tom Holland, all three actors gained significant recognition for these roles, and they are all one of the most well-known roles today of all three actors. Over the past two decades as the different films have been released, there have been some noticeable changes in the marketing campaigns leading up to the release of each first film.

With the release of the first Spider-Man featuring Toby McGuire in 2002, we saw a much more serious depiction of the classic story about a boy getting spider powers. It was a bit less dramatic in terms of special effects. Although CGI and green screens were present, they were still relatively new and, on the rise, especially in comparison to the later films.

Each trilogy of the Spider-Man films reflects the cultural and cinematic landscape of their era, capturing the essence of the times in which they were made. This is shown through the intensity of action scenes, special effects, use of color, and overall storyline in each set of movies. This can be seen in both the trailer and poster promotions used to build anticipation for each release.

When we look at the posters of each era, several differences are notable to point out in terms of the marketing tactics behind them. In the first film, the colors used were mainly warm, consisting of lots of oranges, yellows, and reds. In the latter two films, there are much cooler colors like blues and bright whites. We can also see a change in the types of action photos used to market the movies. As the movies get more recent (left to right) we can see that the shots become more action-focused. The position of Spider-Man becomes more intense, which emphasizes the increase in special effects and action shots packed in each film. Something else that is noticeable is the difference between the spider suits in each film. As the films get more recent, you can see that the lines on his spider suit get less defined. It was small changes like these that demonstrated the different styles of each film, and how the marketing teams relayed that in their promotions.

With such a large audience already behind the making of these films, the marketing for them intended to bring more attention and draw fans in even if they were already anticipating the movies. Using Toby McGuire, an already-known actor at the time of the movie’s release, was a great choice to bring attention to the film, and using Tom Holland in more movies was also a

great marketing strategy to attract a younger audience to the franchise.

On top of that, the marketing and trailers for the most recent Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, teased that all three actors would be in the film which was a great way to not only promote the current Spider-Man series but the previous two as well.
